Artist Bio

Rosalynd Byass is a fine artist, oil painter, and modern surrealist born in South Shields, England and now based in Jarrow, England. Her Fine Art BA HONS degree that she studied at Newcastle College University Centre was how she fully realised her skills in oil painting and passion for surrealism. Surrealism taught her the importance of freeing her mind from anxiety and doubt when approaching her practice. She wrote a dissertation in her final year that focussed on how surrealism was effective at reflecting the reality of the human experience, and this piece of writing along with her oil paintings led to her achieving a First Class degree in 2022.

Her current practice is focused on expressing nuanced feelings of pain and dread through her own library of surrealist imagery that she has been developing since her degree began in 2019. She has always drawn upon her own experiences, and several painful events in her life in the recent year has seen a shift in her work to be more focussed on expressing and analysing pain. As a result, painting is therapeutic and helps her move forward and understand herself more deeply. From the perspective of a gay woman with anxiety, depression, OCD, and PTSD, her work aims to visually showcase aspects of suffering that cannot be easily described with words. She has studied surrealism for almost 4 years now, and she is firm in her belief that the power of surrealism comes from the individual, and it has helped her on her journey of freeing herself from self-doubt and low self-esteem in her life as well as her art.

Artist Statement

Mental health issues and traumatic events form the basis of my work. My library of personal surrealist imagery develops with each painting, and I use it to express nuanced feelings, most prominently pain and dread. The subject that is almost all of my pieces is the feminine form, which often becomes distorted with the feelings that I channel into it. To reap the therapeutic benefits, I need to ensure that the dialogue between my mental reality and the canvas is direct. So usually I only make one or two preliminary sketches before starting a new piece. Detailed, realistic shading, depth, and a balanced composition are important for my art to have an emotional impact. Visualising the unknown and indescribable parts of the human experience inspires me. I hope that viewers who may be suffering can see themselves in my work and feel heard, but also start to understand themselves a bit more just like it helps me understand myself.
